Sacred forest along the Kosi River — where wildlife and the ancient Garjia Devi temple share the landscape
Garjiya Zone derives its name from the revered Garjia Devi temple — a sacred shrine perched dramatically on a large rock in the middle of the Kosi River, just adjacent to the zone's boundary. This unique combination of spiritual heritage and raw wilderness makes Garjiya one of the most atmospherically distinctive safari destinations in Jim Corbett National Park.
The Kosi River forms the western boundary of the zone, creating a rich riparian corridor that attracts tigers, leopards and large elephant herds to its banks. The river is home to gharial and mugger crocodiles that bask on its sandy shores on winter mornings, as well as mahseer fish prized by anglers. The birdlife along the Kosi is exceptional — fish eagles, kingfishers, osprey and dozens of waders recorded.
Inland from the river, the zone transitions into typical Corbett buffer forest — dense sal and mixed woodland with forest clearings that provide good wildlife visibility. Garjiya is less visited than the more famous zones, giving it a peaceful, unhurried quality that discerning wildlife enthusiasts particularly appreciate. The combination of river, forest and the distinctive Garjia temple backdrop makes this uniquely memorable.
Tigers regularly cross the Kosi riverbed and patrol the forest edge — dramatic river crossing sightings.
Both crocodile species bask on sandy Kosi banks — Garjiya is excellent for crocodile viewing.
